Why Your Business Isn't Selling Enough
Most businesses don't fail because of a bad product. They fail because of one bottleneck nobody has found yet. Here is how to find yours.
Almost every business that comes to us opens the same way: "our sales are low, we need more ads."
Sometimes that is true. Usually it is not. More often the traffic is already there and something further down the line is quietly losing it.
The problem with starting at the top
Advertising is the most visible part of a sales system, so it gets blamed first. It is also the easiest thing to buy, which is why most agencies are happy to agree with you.
But a sale travels through ten steps, and advertising is only the first:
Attention → Interest → Lead → Conversation → Qualification → Offer → Objection → Closing → Delivery → Retention
A sale fails at whichever step is weakest. If the weak step is step eight, buying more of step one makes the problem more expensive, not smaller.
A real example
An e-commerce business came to us convinced they needed a bigger ad budget. We looked at the funnel before touching anything:
- Ads — traffic was healthy. Not the problem.
- Website — people understood the product.
- Product page — plenty of add-to-carts.
- Checkout — most people abandoned here.
The money was leaking at checkout. More advertising would have pushed more people into the same broken step, burning budget faster.
The fix was the checkout, not the ad budget.
How to find your own bottleneck
You do not need analytics software to start. You need four numbers:
- How many people reach you in a month
- How many of those start a conversation
- How many of those receive an offer
- How many of those buy
Where the biggest drop sits, that is where to look first. The step before the drop is working; the step at the drop is not.
Why this matters more than the fix itself
Fixing the wrong thing is worse than fixing nothing. It costs money, it takes time, and it convinces you the problem is unsolvable when really it was never the problem.
If something is broken, scaling it makes it worse faster.
Find the leak before you turn up the pressure. Everything else follows from that.
